One way to distinguish yourself from the crowd of managers is with a project management certificate. This is an unbiased third party document that says you have the education and skills to do the job.

There’s been a project management certificate for many years, and we’ve been covered it here, but as the profession grows, you’ll want to keep you updated with changes.

For example, the Project Management Institute (PMI) conducts industry-wide surveys about project management every five to seven years. Due to the latest information gathered from recent surveys, PMI will update its PMP certification, which will be effective in the first quarter of 2018.

Here are some of the best project management certifications, from IT project management certification to more traditional industries.

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)

PMI administers a number of certifications in our area, including the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM). This is the first step in your certification journey. It does require a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 1,500 hours of project management experience or 23 hours of project management education. But it does give you the basics and is a way to differentiate yourself from those who are trying to get into the business.

Further entry-level certification with this certification you have opened the door to a career in project management, in which you have learned the knowledge and skills needed to lead a project to success.

Project Management Professional (PMP)

Again, a PMP certificate, managed by PMI, is a rigorous and thorough test that covers all aspects of project management. It shows that it is best for each stage, from starting, planning and implementing, to monitoring, controlling and closing the project to a triple limit of time, cost and scope. This exam is based on PMI’s Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), and you need a high school degree or equivalent, a 7,500 hour management project or a 35 hour project management education. If you have a four-year degree, you may only be eligible to manage the project for 4,500 hours.

Associate in Project Management (APM), Professional in Project Management (PPM) and Certified Project Director (CPD)

All three levels of certification are offered by the non-profit Global Association for Quality Management (GAQM), APM covers a wide spectrum of project management skills at the entry level and does not require experience. PPM is the next level, targeting experienced project managers with some formal management experience. CPD is only for professionals who have significant experience in this field. It is useful for complex projects and focuses on management, budget and work area while working on multiple projects.

Certified Project Management Practitioner (CPMP)

You do not need any experience to obtain a CPMP certificate, but it is recommended to take a three-day preparation course for the exam. Proctored by the EC-Council organization established to deal with cyber-terrorism, and CPMP undergoes a number of methods and types of projects, are generally more complex, and are recommended to project managers with the aim of adding value to their already established skills.

Master Project Manager (MPM)

The MPM certificate is handled by the American Academy of Project Management (AAPM) and is recognized worldwide. The original core is entry-level certification of project management terms and conditions, for more advanced project managers who have already passed the PRINCE2 Foundation.

Project Management in IT Security (PMITS)

Like CPMP, PMITS are run by EC-Council and focus solely on managing IT security projects. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in project management. It is recommended that there is an EC-Council training program offered before the exam.
