RACI Matrix Is Not Rocket Science! Learn Them Now!

Delegation is an integral part of the project manager’s position, so it is important to define roles and responsibilities early in a project. The RACI matrix will help. As a project manager, it is important that you set the aspirations of those involved in your project from the very beginning.

It takes a lot of people to get involved in projects, so how can we prevent a situation where people are having a hard time working with each other? It is equally difficult to deal with a situation where no one can take responsibility. How people know the extent of their responsibility; When should they add you as their project manager or when should they use their judgment?

The RACI model is a basic method used to define roles and responsibilities to prevent ambiguity of certain roles and responsibilities during the project.

The acronym RACI stands for:


Person who works to accomplish the task who is responsible for doing the job or making decisions. As a rule, this is a person; Examples can be a business analyst, application developer or technical architect.


The person responsible for the accurate and detailed execution of the work. It has to be an individual, always a project manager or project sponsor. It is this position that the responsible party is responsible for and endorsing their work.


People who have input into the project and who have two-way communication. This is usually done by a few people, mostly subject matter experts.


There is a one-way interaction with people who know about growth and with whom. There are people who are affected by the results of the projects and they need to stay up-to-date.

Without clearly defined roles and responsibilities, projects are easy to get into trouble. Once employees know what management wants from them, it is easy for them to complete their work on time, within budget and in the right quality.

The RACI Matrix follows the model and is used to analyze, adapt and communicate roles and responsibilities.

Creating a RACI Matrix (Step by Step)

  • Define all the steps involved in delivering the project and list them in the completion order on the left side of the chart.
  • Find and list all the tasks of the project at the top of the map.
  • Complete the chart cells and specify who is responsible, responsible and who will be advised and updated on each task.
  • Make sure each job has a responsible function and a responsible role.
  • There should be no more than one responsibility for any act. Resolve any disagreement in more than one place for a particular task.
